Cornerstone Launches WHO Programme Plan in South African province
On 13 January 2011
The Centre for Rural Health in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal and Cornerstone Global Associates have launched the Business Plan for the implementation of the Integrated Management of Adult and Adolescent Illnesses (IMAI) programme in the province. Developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), IMAI represents a set of clinical tools and health guidelines systems designed to develop and support primary healthcare in settings of high HIV prevalence and limited resources. KwaZulu-Natal has one of the highest incidences of HIV in the world.
Leading the project from Cornerstone Global Associates is Dr Greg Martin (Partner). Martin commented: "the Business Plan for IMAI in KwaZulu Natal represents an important component of the planning and implementation of this important initiative. Not only does it provide a concise synopsis of of the vision and planned activities for the project, but it also outlines operational and governance details that will inspire confidence in the donor community and promote buy-in from the many important stakeholders in the area".
Dr Kirsty McHarry, Project Leader for the IMAI Project at the Centre for Rural Health said:
"IMAI is improtant to KwaZulu-Natal because it is a tried and tested strategy that will support health workers and mobilise communities to decrease the burden of disease faced on a daily basis."
Cornerstone Global Associates offers a world-class health services team, helping clients develop and implement strategies. In addition to Dr Martin, the team includes Peter Horn (Senior Consultant) who has considerable experience holding several leadership positions with the UK's National Health Service (NHS) and as Director with the UK's Department of Health.
Our team also includes Gillian Merron (Senior Consultant), former British government Minister of State for Public Health and Minister for Africa at the Department for International Development.
Alan Anstead (Senior Consultant), who held several senior positions with the Department for International Development and the UK's Foreign Office commented about the project:
"South Africa has the highest number of people infected with HIV in the world, with more than one quarter of these residing in KwaZulu-Natal province. This pandemic infection is more than a major health issue as it also retards the country's economic growth and increases poverty. These facts highlight the importance to me of the IMAI programme".
Ghanem Nuseibeh (Founder) said: "The launch of the plan is a culmination of months of working closely with the Centre for Public Health. We are delighted to continue helping the Centre to raise the necessary funds to ensure that project is implemented effectively and sustainably".
Cornerstone Global Associates is now working with the Centre for Public Health to raise funds for the implementation phase of the project.
