Hudson warns on unpreparedness for UK hung parliament
on 28 April 2010
Lucian Hudson, Partner and MD, has warned that Westminster and Whitehall were ‘poorly equipped' to deal with a hung parliament and urged directors of communications to treat the situation now as a crisis. His remarks were carried by PR Week, accessible at this link.
Hudson added that "It's a winner-takes-all culture, but on some issues, closer collaboration is a no-brainer, e.g. long-term care for the elderly. On other issues, say the economy, you need real clarity: a fudge is bad for the economy, because tough decisions need to be taken, so we can all move on".
"But politicians and civil servants are fast-learners, and the experience of Scottish politics, and local government coalitions across the UK, stand out. We are not short of insight if we know where to look for it, and use the collaborative model as a default, whether it is tilted towards collaboration or competition". Chapters 3 and 5 of Hudson's report The Enabling State: Collaborating for Success can be tapped for insight into making collaboration work from the outset. The report can be downloaded here.

Lucian J. Hudson on OpenUp panel for £50,000 development fund
on 23 March, 2010
Lucian J. Hudson, Partner and Managing Director, is on the OpenUp panel of experts announced by the UK's Stationary Office. TSO (The Stationery Office), the leading provider of publishing solutions to the public sector, has today announced the launch of OpenUp, a £50,000 development fund aimed at encouraging the British public to come up with ideas of how open data can be put to better use for their communities. The move by TSO to offer the substantial fund for investment follows the recent launch of Data.gov.uk by the Government. Individuals or teams of people are encouraged to enter the competition by submitting an idea that can use public data to deliver value to communities locally, regionally, nationally or even internationally. As well as securing the fund to see their idea developed the winner will also be awarded a personal prize of £1,000.
Supported by a panel of influential individuals from across British commerce, the OpenUp competition will be open to submissions from today, 23rd March 2010, until 26th May 2010. Entries will then be reviewed and a shortlist of the top five will be invited to present their ideas to the expert panel in person in June in central London, with the development fund being awarded that same evening.
“Opening up government information online provides an amazing opportunity to the British public and it’s absolutely key that we, as individuals and communities, grasp this opportunity with both hands. People across the country have never before been presented with so much information and we want to encourage them to use it to their advantage, delivering real value to their lives,” commented Richard Dell, CEO of TSO. “We’re simply asking for the most creative and useful ideas to be submitted from across the UK and we’ll develop the tools and processes to ensure that one becomes a reality and meets its objectives – by delivering greater value for the community.”
“OpenUp is the chance for people to embrace their most innovative ideas and see them come to fruition, thanks to this substantial development fund from TSO,” added Lucian J. Hudson, Partner and Managing Director, Cornerstone Global Associates, and the UK government's first Director of e-Communications. “My colleagues and I will be looking for ideas that will make a difference, bringing greater value and benefits to the every day lives of citizens and communities. We’re looking forward to reviewing the entries and seeing someone’s idea become a reality.”

Pact with the Devil: the Ethics, Politics and Economics of Anti-Machiavellian Machiavellism
on 22 February, 2010
Cornerstone Partner Dr Mark Somos is organizing a conference on anti-Machiavellian Machiavellism. Machiavelli is often called 'the father of modernity' because of his intention to ground politics in an account of human nature free from utopian normativism. This realist design was ill-favoured during religious and idealistic periods of history. Yet recent scholarship identified several thinkers who emulated Machiavelli despite their public denunciation of his politics and morals. The Network's principal objective is to establish whether these thinkers' works and writing strategies constitute a hitherto unidentified, distinct and coherent discourse. If so, then its examination will shed new light on the most fundamental shift in Western politics, from Christian idealism to modern realism, and on the perennial problem of political ethics.
